Keratex Summer Hoof Care

Keratex Summer Hoof Care

Keratex is one of the leading hoof care brands used by horse owners and farriers globally, consisting of a huge range of products from hoof hardener, to washes and scrubs, and even supplements.

Keratex is a family-run business, founded by Dr John Irving MBE, PhD, C Eng, Fraes back in 1990 in Wiltshire with the creation of the Hoof Hardener. He saw a gap in the market for this product, which has been successfully patented, and the Keratex range has continued to grow over the years.

No Hoof No Horse

A good hoof care routine is paramount to our horse’s wellbeing. After all, ‘No Hoof No Horse’ isn’t a commonly used phrase for no reason. Many of us pay particular attention to our horse’s legs and hooves during the winter due to the wet and muddy conditions but often lack the same level of attention during the summer. However, the dry summer months can cause our horse’s hooves to dry out too much and become brittle and damaged.

Let’s take a look at some of their leading products to help combat this…

Hoof Hardener

The flagship product which has stood the test of time and remains a firm favourite to many equestrians across the globe! This bottle of wonder contains a unique flexibility agent as well as a hardening agent making this the perfect product to protect your horse from brittle, cracked or weak hooves and sensitive or thin soles. It’s also great for minimising repeated shoe loss, helping transition to barefoot and general hoof damage.

Simply apply to the lower half of the outer hoof wall and the sole (not frog) of the goof daily for the first week, then 2-3 times per week to maintain. Always wear gloves when applying.

Nail Hole Damage Repair

With its super easy application using the nozzle, the liquid can be squirted into the nail holes in the horses’s hoof, both old and new, to cleans and repair. The liquid works by hardening both the interior and the point where the nail entered the hoof, ensuring that existing damage, gaps or rips will not develop further and will not ‘ladder’ up or across the hoof.

While this is great for hooves in the summer when they are typically drier and more prone to damage, this is a fab all year round product to use!

Coconut Oil Hoof Balm

The premium blend of ingredients, including coconut oil, beeswax and tea tree oil helps to nourish and condition hooves, also leaving them with a lovely glossy finish. The ingredients in the balm work together perfectly to condition and protect your horse’s hooves with a breathable finish.

Can be applied all over the hoof including the coronary band, sole and frog to give nourishment all over. (PS – the coconut oil hoof balm was the BETA International Innovation Award Winner 2017)

Hoof Moisturiser

Possibly one of the most important products from Keratex for the summer months is the Hoof Moisturiser. Specifically designed to restore the correct moisture levels in dehydrated and brittle hooves, and then maintaining that level for optimum hoof condition. The hoof moisturiser will stop hooves from cracking and breaking through being dry and dehydrated as well as encouraging new hoof growth by keeping the coronary band tissue supple.

The Hoof Moisturiser can be applied all over the hooves including the frog, coronary band and heels for maximum benefit.

So, there you have it, four incredible ‘must-have’ Keratex products to help keep your horse’s hooves strong and healthy during the dry, hot months of Summer.
