Spring has arrived so we love to have a good spring clean down the yard. Cleaning tack is an essential maintenance job. It not only keeps your horse comfortable, it is vital for a healthy horse to keep equipment they wear clean and free from grease and dirt built up. Hands up who has some tack in depserate need of cleaning? I think we all leave this job in winter and it is such a nice feeling to have a big spring tack clean.
We have tried out the Belvoir range of tack products to see if they can revive one of our very dirty headcollars which has been used on our horse in the field over the winter.
Step 1 – Belvoir Tack Cleaner
When a build up of dirt accumulates on your tack it is important to use a gentle cleaner to clean this off that will not strip our the oils required to keep leather supple and healthy. Carr Day & Martin have developed their spray cleaner as the first step in cleaning your tack. Simply sprap on to the leather and wipe away the dirt.
For areas where the grease has built up, leave the cleaner for 5 minutes to loosen the dirt before wiping it away.
Our tester said ‘I simply sprayed the cleaner on the headcollar and left it for 2 minutes before being able to wipe the dirt away with a cloth. No more scrubbing required!’
Step 2 – Tack Conditioner
Once your tack is clean it is important to use a conditioner such as the Carr Day & Martin Tack Conditioner Spray to replensish oils and keep the leather soft and supple. This spray tack conditioner allows you to easily spray on to your leather and wipe off excess with a cloth. The glycerine fills and seals pores in the leather to form a barrier against salt, dirt, grease and water.
Nourishing Dry Leather
We love Belvoir Leather Balsam – An intensive conditioner providing ultimate nourishment for new or fine leather as well as deeply conditioning dry or cracked leather. We find this is a great product for tack which received heavy wear such as our field leather headcollars. It is also great when chosing to store tack and keeps nourishing the leather to keep it in it’s best condition.
The soft Lanolin and Beeswax formula keeps leather in optimum condition and add brilliant shine. To be used after ‘Step 1‘ Belvoir Tack Cleaner on occasions where a more intense condition is required.
Our tester used this to condition the leather headcollar and as you can see from the images, the headcollar looks soft and supple with it’s colour restored. Our tester said ‘This product comes with a handy applicator sponge, easy to wipe over your clean tack and leaves it nice and healthy looking. The leather is soft and supple and so much easier to get through the buckles.’
